Media Flake Out. A Statement on Mr. West. 16th
Posted at 10:28 am September

First things first. It is a sad and depressing world in which the antics of an inebriated musician dominate news coverage and take priority over drastically more pressing issues facing our nation. Due to the nature of the incident I feel like this is the proper venue to be talking about it, but for major news stations to continue offer coverage for this story is frankly pathetic.

I was sitting exactly 20 rows behind the action when our favorite unabashed practitioner of speaking one’s mind hopped onto the stage and proceeded to add yet another gaffe to his resume of public mishaps. Although I was probably one of the only ones in Radio City Hall laughing at the immediate time of the interruption it took no time for the issue to be the talk of the entire nation. No really, the entire nation. CNN, NBC, ABC, Nas’s favorite news station FOX and broadcasting channels I’d never heard of before were handling this incident like it was the OJ trial all over again. I don’t even have to bring up Twitter where Mr. West has been a trending topic just about every hour since he hopped onto stage days ago.

So besides highlighting the fact that the vast majority of people have no lives and even less things to speak intelligently about this whole issue brought one sad thing to light for me personally. The depressing and fickle state of media and the frightening racial realities that still exist today in America. I’ve been sitting in University classes for the past week so excuse my essay writing ahead of time.

Take a look at the above. Back in 2005 the good folks over at the time honored publication known as Time magazine took it upon themselves to declare Kanye West “the smartest man in Pop music.” Find any media outlet still stating the above and I’ll literally grant you my life savings. (It’s mostly sneakers don’t start Googling just yet.)

Kanye is a jerk. Or in the words of the man who lives in the House of eternal Whiteness, a “jackass.” But here is my problem with the whole world going off at one time and deciding to brand Kanye an ass at this particular juncture.

We’ve known Kanye to be an asshole for a very, very, very long time.

There is nothing new about these revelations. This is the artist who calls himself the international asshole after all. Hell, this isn’t even the first time the man has jumped onto stage. But low and behold here comes the entire world who only years ago was declaring Kanye West a genius of the genre because he wore clothes that fit, rapped about leaving college, was the son of college professor and spoke on “socially conscious” topics rather than those of the street. The media was quick to embrace a rapper who diverged from the gangster imagery 50 Cent and others had made so popular at the time Kanye came to popularity.

Anything to make rap safe for the suburbs and mainstream consumption the major media outlets were ready to promote. Than, low and behold here comes Kanye in his Ralph Lauren Polo sweaters and Gap chinos. What more could they ask for right? Well I guess they didn’t do their research because Kanye never lied or changed who he was. An asshole right from the jump.

He has been doing things like this from day one. If you appreciate Kanye as an artist than you should expect things like this to occur. And if you stand behind him as a person that you should not only expect these things, but you should in fact support those same actions since they come from a man you support. I think what he did was idiotic and in extremely bad taste but I still support Kanye and his actions that night and all the bone-headed, thick-skulled mistakes he’ll make in the future.

Now I’m going to change lanes here and what I’m about to say is going to piss off a few people I’d imagine.

The fact that Kanye West had to interrupt Taylor Swift in order to create a veritable media wild storm is not a good statement about the state of racial realities in our nation. Now walk with me here for a moment and see if this makes any sense.

Kanye West once stood on national TV after a decade defining national tragedy in Hurricaine Katrina and said that the than President of the United States of America and I quote, “Does not care about Black people.” Now to me, that seems FAR worse than interrupting an acceptance speech at an awards show that means next to nothing when you sit down and look at it.

Now how much media attention did Kanye get for that statement? As I recall, from major outlets the coverage was next to none. As it should have been. But whoa, whoa, whoa. Kanye West interuped a perfectly innocent suburban country singing, red meat eating, born and bred in the heartland of America teenage white girl from accepting an award and the entire nation goes to hell in a hand basket over the travesty.

There is something ass backwards about this situation and if you can’t see it than I don’t know what you’re looking at. Maybe it’s Kanye’s haircut which was the only thing more offensive than his remarks that night.

Throughout history whenever a black man has violated the right of an “innocent,” young, white female the reaction has redefined the word extreme. Ask Emmet Till. I’m not trying to say that this should even be compared to this situation but look at what people are saying about Kanye West on Twitter. I believe there is already a “Kanyenigger” username on the site not to mention the endless bevy of people (mostly middle aged white American men) saying that someone should murder, lynch, and in more words kills Kanye West.

It brings about a sad realization about the feelings people bury deep. The feelings that only emerge when people feel something so grievous has occurred that they must let their true colors fly. The fact that this is what prompted people to speak is depressing on an entirely different level but at the same time completely expected if you take just a short look at the history of relations between these two parties.

Now I realize this is a little heavy for a Hypebeast blog. I’ve never been able to just look at things at their most simple level so I guess it’s expected from my end. Hopefully someone else actually read all of that and has something to offer, I’d definitely love to read.

For those who just scrolled to the end, here is the synopsis. Kanye is an asshole, but you should expect these things from him, he has made no efforts to hide his feelings in the past why would he start now? The media is fickle and looking only to serve it’s agenda and in realizing that Kanye is not the squeak clean, sweater clad, suburban rap icon they would like him to be are now enjoying a period of crucifying him for something that should have gotten 120 seconds of coverage and nothing more. Lastly, race relations in this country point to a black man violating an innocent white girl as a most egregious sin, even more so apparently than speaking blasphemously about a President or the vast array of current events that press our nation as we speak.

Sadly, although much is improved, very little as also changed. It is just buried deeper than ever under the skin and it takes moments like these to expose that truth.

I’m not even going to speak on our current President’s comments. Barry O was trying to keep it funky.

Stay Safe-Phil.

this is exactly what i have trying to tell my friends but the all seem to have have this one-sided idea about what happend that this is kanye west being racist for saying that beyonce deserved the award and not taylor swift, which is extreamly far from what he was doing he in my opinoin was just saying something that im pretty sure everyone at the vmas was thinking how did she win and not anybody eles in that catergory.
i even heard that in some state can’t remember the name is boycotting MR west on the radio for his statement i honseslty thought that this would die down by the next morning but after seeing all the late night shows like E and chealsy latly has long conversation about i knew that this would not be going any where soon.
i heard so many racial comments about kanye west than i have ever heard in my life, i never expected this much hatred from people that i know and strangers alike, this is serious problem in our nation and i see that the racism in this country has not gone anywhere but has been reformed into other diffrent means of being used it is sad but a true fact about the mind of most americans .

You said “It brings about a sad realization about the feelings people bury deep.” I agree that it did this but in response to the middle aged white men… A lot of those people don’t bury their feelings deep. They are outright racist. I live in middle America where it is very easy to come across a racist person. It just brought these people out of the woodwork.

I think yes, it brought out buried emotions from some individuals but really it just acts as a reminder that there are very closed minded individuals in the world. It is sad but it is reality. I still think we as a generation are doing better than our parents and if our kids can live more harmoniously than us then at least we are making progress.

Btw, if I was filmed everytime I made a mistake acting a drunk fool then I’d be in serious trouble lol.

This is the first time you have let me down with a blog post. I would like to first say this is unlike you to even post anything that has been a media craze. Now here comes my true words on the issue, I feel we all have known for a while that it is still no equality when it comes to race’s in the world period, and I hate to say it but me being from the midwest I deal with it on a regular. But to compare YE’s comment at bush to his comment now—is way off. Reason being 1. The bush comment was no way and hell going to be blown up–due to the fact of the tradegy and America knew it would be totally wrong to even lash out at west comments. We all know the area that was really destructed was a majority black populated area, and the proof was out there-that Bush didn’t show hell of concern–so why make it an issue about YE’s feelings/comment knowing if media would of dragged it along like this situation–it would of fueled an major issue in America so, they killed it quick! Now I do feel that the reason media is blowing this way up is due to Ye’s status and him being known ass a jackass. I also credit Beyonce response as fuel and the fact how he’s been a tab bit out of control. With this racism being showed by middle aged white American men–hasn’t changed one bit. I love the post but a few of my friends I know feel the “innocent suburban country singing, red meat eating, born and bred in the heartland of America teenage white girl” was not needed. Phil, bro I do say though, the best blog I have read that has covered this issue. Great one waiting on your response to my comment. But be honest down inside you know why Ye got treated–Cause they never felt the guy they loved would ever treat somebody like this and he wild’s for not getting his respect/award’s that he feel’s he should be entitled to. And Ye will always be the my dude, but his choices has been really way off, lately.
I been cut this short due to fingers tired and class work one love homie!

ebi: Glad you enjoy bruv.

matt: I agree 100% man. I didn’t mention the outright racists because they frankly are not going to change. That is their nature and their belief and it doesn’t take a Kanye West gaffe to set them off, they were nurtured to think that way already.

What scares me is the people who hide the feelings only to let them come out in shrouded ways as they are now. Those are the people that are lying to themselves which is even more damaging. Always appreciate your comments brother.

Joel: That’s huge man! Thanks for finally dropping a comment it means a lot even if it is the first and last one hah. Take care sir.

modeer: I am not an English major, thanks for the compliment though ha.

Whit: That’s the hope! Glad to hear it.

Chuck:
I disagree with you 100%.

You said “the reason media is blowing this way up is due to Ye’s status and him being known ass a jackass.”

My point is that this could not be further from the truth. The reason this is even an issue in the media is because it was a black man violating a young white girl. If Lil Wayne had hopped up and done exactly what Kanye did it would have been the same reaction. And Wayne has no reputation for being a “jackass” like Kanye does.

If Eminem however had gotten up and done this, or if Kanye had interrupted Justin Timberlake’s acceptance speech the issue would have been laughable and over. (Just like the last time he interrupted a speech at an awards show.)

History shows us that a black man acting in this manner will illicit a certain type of response again and again, this entire scenario just goes to further that truism.

As for the description of Taylor Swift it is nothing more than verbose writing to drive a point home. Obviously it is exaggeration and I myself being half white say all of those things with no malice.

The fact that this issue has been a media “craze” does not effect my decision to post about it at all. I posted about it because I felt I had a viewpoint to offer that no one else was speaking on. Sorry to hear that you and your friends were let down.

What kanye did was messed up and tasteless. It’s what we should expect from kanye but that still doesnt give him a pass. But on the same note the man did apologize 3 times and has expressed how deeply sorry he is. Taylor Swift has also accepted his apology so the matter should be dead by now but it’s still not. Being a black male I can most def see how they’re trying to crucify him because of race matters. And the news media hasn’t really said it out up front but you can tell that it’s being hinted on. Lord only knows what Bill O Riley said about this.

PS: The thing that pissed me off the most is that this was suppose to be in the memory of MJ and no ones talking about that or Janets performance, or Madonnas speech. Instead of this being remembered as the VMA’s dedicated to the memory of Micheal Jackson it’s now turned into the infamous kanye West beats on Taylor Swift award show.

Vee Urbanite Says: 16th September at 7:47 PM

Phil I agree with you , I dont have problem that Kanye expressing his feeling but he could of done it some other way. IMO kanye’s blog get more hit then that mtv crap so that’s one way to express yourself. My only problem is the kanye stans that keep telling themselves ” He didn’t do anything wrong”
but yea you pretty much right about everything.

dayinthelyf Says: 16th September at 7:57 PM

Yeah, you said something I had thought since the moment the incident happened. The fact that people knew she didn’t really deserve the award; she didn’t IN MY EYES. Kanye had the right to speak his mind but maybe in a different manner. It must have been one of those rare moments when someone says exactly what you were thinking and you feel guilty about the thought. Kanye’s appearance was at the most opportune time because people were in need of a scapegoat.
What pains me the most is that it had to be Kanye, and even more a black man…I truly believe that if a white guy had stood up and done such a thing, it would seem as if he was acting out of character, which he probably is, BUT, the whole thing would have seemed comedic. It’s just the way things are. The image of the black male is something that has troubled me a lot, even at my youthful age. I could write a book on this type of thing.

What are your thoughts, Phil?

Whatever Says: 16th September at 8:37 PM

Whatever Phil, I am a black female, and once I saw what Kanye did, I said enough! He’s an douchebag asshole. You’re right he’s been doing this stuff for years. Katrina, EUROPE MTV Movie Awards, Grammy’s. But what really pisses me off is that you’re making this a race issue. We can’t grow as an African-American community if we’re always blaming something on race.

Sincerely,
Your Brotha

Phil (LochNess) Says: 16th September at 8:43 PM

I always get happy when someone agrees outright with me!

I am not “blaming” anything on race. I agree with you 100% perfect that Kanye’s actions were that of a complete ass hole.

The only reason race becomes a factor in this issue is the coverage of the issue itself. I held, and still continue to hold that the reason this issue ever lived on for so long is because it was the violation of a white female by a black male and the historical ramifications that holds.

I agree, I would love to state that we live in a fully realize post-racial culture but that is not the reality of the modern world. “Blaming” race has nothing to do with the African American communities inability to grow. To find the true meanings of that situation you have to dig far deeper and I’d be writing a veritable novel. I agree that pulling the race card is redundant in many situations today but this in my humble opinion is a time in which race must be included.

Micah Says: 16th September at 8:51 PM

To be honest, I never saw it that way, until you pointed that out. But I have to disagree with your post, I think the majority of young people who complained about Kanye, I think were a bit disappointed by him. This whole Kanye thing just became an opportunity for the racists to post something racists. I know my little cousin, (who is a little chubby white boy) was super excited and hoping that Kanye would be award.I am a Kanye fan aswell, and I’ve stood by him through all his asshole moves, but there’s only so much he can do. Until you just have to say enough. I’m still a Kanye fan, and if anything he disappointed me. I hate country music, and I’m from Texas…and by the way Taylor Swift’s video wasn’t that great…and Beyonce’s wasn’t that great either. After all of this do I hate Kanye? No. I think I hate the fact, that some people always assume that a white person is racist. That if someone did something wrong and the person happened to be black, then it’s just racist. Must some people always think the worst of other people? (i.e. Racism-Counter Racism)

Brian Says: 16th September at 8:53 PM

What’s funny is that I’ve heard the most racist stuff not from white people but from African-American people. I’m from the middle east, and it makes me so sad to read about the civil rights movements, and Martin Luther King in my history text book, and to hear some of the cruelest stuff from your people. Not what I was expecting when I moved here. Do you really not think you’re post isn’t racist?

Phil (LochNess) Says: 16th September at 9:00 PM

Micah: I never said anything about assuming any white person was racist. I said that certain white middle aged men were making racist comments on Twitter but there is no assumption going on there, those are just facts.

It’s sad that we often assume the worst in others but for many realities have proven time and time again for those assumptions to be correct. Me personally? I try my best to have no conceived notions about anyone. I come from a multi racial family and to hate anyone is to hate myself haha.

Brain: Glad to hear there are some readers from the Middle East. It’s funny that you call Black people “my” people. My father is as a white as Bill Clinton and my mother is Haitian. So I am absolutely 0% African American.

I’ll continue on down your train of thought regardless however for the sake of shedding some light for you as best I can. The racist statements you are hearing from Black people are undoubtly disturbing to you as a foreigner who’s only knowledge of the situation comes from text books. I would say not to put too much stock in what you’ve read. You don’t know the personal histories of the people speaking to you and where they are coming from or why they may be saying what they are.

With that being said I would say that every racial group has its individuals who are ignorant and racist. You just have to come across them. I can’t speak for anyone but myself but if I had to offer up a statement, I would say that we are all, each and every one of us racist in our own way.

Was my post racist? I surely hope not, I only hoped to bring light to a situation in the way I interpreted it, I never claim to be an expert on any subject, but never once in my article did I ever say that one racial group was right and that one was wrong.

I said that everyone has feelings buried deep under and that issues like these merely highlight them. Doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, brown, or tie dyed.

Dude Says: 16th September at 10:18 PM

Dude what state are you from? Because the Kanye West Katrina thing was pretty big where I was from.

Bryant Stewart Says: 16th September at 10:35 PM

Usually I don’t touch on topics like this, however Phil’s excerpts gave me goose bumps. For a while now I’ve been trying to conceal the fact that things like this mostly are racially driven. Though if race “doesn’t” play a part surely the bias antics of most right winged Americans fly in and cause further mayhem.

Now if any of you can recall Hip-Hop in itself is an art form that has yet to be globally accepted. Crafts such as Acting, Art(paint/print), and Fashion are held at the highest of regards. Seeing as how Hip-Hop started in the 1980’s this was at a time when most African Americans were depicted as a poverty stricken and a drug dealing hooligans(mostly do to the depiction of us on tv and the big screen).

Hip-Hop has always been a way to express oneself rhythmically. It was artist saying how they truly felt that got the art to were it is today. Do I think Kanye’s timing was right for the outburst, no; however I do think he would have said it sooner or later. Now for you non-believers just shimmy on over to Twitter’s Trending Topic section and click Kanye West. Here you’ll find an abundance of racial slurs hinting at what state America(The Land of the Free)is in.

Also I was sad to find out that each time I watched coverage of this foolery on FOX, CNN, and ABC Kanye was only shown on the red carpet with his Hennessy Bottle. Furthering my belief of this being racial, as they wanted to paint a picture in the minds of those who weren’t familiar with West. I remember distinctly watching coverage on Hurricane Katrina and hearing an anchor(white) say and I quote “those people are so poor, and are so black”. If you haven’t heard of this particular incident, don’t worry it’s because your good friends in media shielded you from it.

I feel that as an African American we’ll never be fully accepted or equal. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but Obama has had some of the harshest criticism I’ve seen in recent history. Even former president Jimmy Carter believes that there are far too many racial derivatives towards Obama. I do however hope that Kanye will in fact take time off to reflect on himself as a person and this year’s past events. I will continue to support his genius, I mean after all Einstein had over 20 mathematical mistakes that are to this day overshadowed by his overall performance.

If anyone has any feedback for me personally feel free to contact me @BryantStewart.

Thanks Phil,

Bryant Stewart

Todd Covington Says: 16th September at 11:38 PM

Phil I couldn’t agree with you more, but I’m going to go in deeper. Off I go! After watching the aftermath of the awards show I was led to two conclusions on the situation. Kanye West was chastised a lot for something that alot of people on facebook and other social networks deemed to be true. Who was Taylor Swift and how did she win? Kanye did make a mockery of his craft in one fail swoop. At the same time did anyone who has morals, or values realize that after the commercial break Jack Black a white man got to pray and worship to the devil with no problem? Society has taken a one-way turn in the wrong direction. Morals are gone both situations were wrong but praising the devil seems to alright versus one man speaking his mind on young white female. Those in the bible belt of America aren’t talking about Jack Black, but they are hanging Kanye West like Mike Vick hung dogs. Smearing there names forgetting their past and halting the GPS of their lives, and acting as God to map out his future.

Don't agree Says: 17th September at 1:43 AM

So you are saying that if Taylor Swift was black (but still very nice, young, attractive, talented, and innocent), this still would not have been blown out of proportion? I do not agree with that. I do not think it has to do with the fact she is white. I think it has to do with the fact that she is still a very young artist who is seen by the public as a good girl. If anything, it is because she is a girl, not because she is white. The race thing is pushin it.

Frenchi Jones Says: 17th September at 8:11 AM

I don’t know if I necessarily agree with you. I understand the statement that you are trying to make, because I do know that typically blacks and/or issues or statements made concerning them do usually get less play in the media. However, I recall seeing several clips of what Kanye had to say about President Bush being played on outlets such as CNN. Can’t speak for Fox or any others, but I specifically recall seeing it several times on CNN.

Kacy, A Computer Science major from New York City

You have to keep in mind that Kanye did not have the fan base that he does now in 2005, although he’d garnered fandom, it was no where near the level that it is today. With far more outlets for the information exchange between normal people like Twitter and facebook the situation was blown out of proportion. In 2005, the social web hadn’t emerged yet, blogging didn’t have much of an audience and video content sites like YouTube were in their infancy in terms of mainstream viewership.

No doubt the media outlet that reigned supreme during Hurricane Katrina was television, and it just so happens that the professional media didn’t think much of Mr. West’s comments at the time. Fast-forward to 2009 here the social web reigns, and the general media is tailing behind people’s opinions on the web.

I think that’s all it really was.

This is a great thought-provoking entry and as well as a great read. I don’t believe anything that happened during that award show moment was any sign of racism at all, just a regular jackass moment which is expected. But there are a few folks that take it into their own hands to make it seem that way. Everyone is affected by racism, and African-Americans are one of the major victims. Being classified in that category I have dealt with issues and my parents ten-folds more than I. There are people like Kanye that are out to prove that “racism is still alive” and it is. Racism will never die. I believe we all have identified someone as being “white” or “black” and in that instance it makes us all racist. I haven’t been reading up on this Kanye situation on Twitter or on news (too busy enjoying Lil Duval’s Lil Mama jokes), so I haven’t really been able to hear any racist remarks on that. At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and the media/social networks always got theirs.

Peace Love and Unity Folks

Now how much media attention did Kanye get for that statement? As I recall, from major outlets the coverage was next to none.” This is True, I didn’t know Kanye said that until the next day they were talking about it on my local urban hip hop stations, that’s the only place I remember hearing about the incedent. Now this VMA things, shit i got texts messages initially, but then it was on MTV news that night a whole bunch of websites, CNN, NBC, etc all that you named covered it. Jay Leno was petty, if you guys didn’t see that youtube it. Jay leno interviews Kanye and says “what do you think your mother would think about you doing this” and Kanye just pauses really long and answers. Well put, and “most” of everyone seem to be on the same page.Great observation. Im still a bit perplex on how obvious it is that the media took the situation to new heights because the classic tale of a “black man” infringing the space of a “white female” is considered a social taboo. Kanye’s speaking out on the president not liking black people was more of an issue if anything because he spoke against the President of the United States and labeled him as a racist despite how obvious that is. Compare the two. Seat back and think of what issue was more of an uproar. Fox News can bash Obama and say that “his baby mama” is Mechelle. Like come on racism in this country has been so transparent since the election when will people come to reality and see that the man was tipsey and got a little carried away.He didnt even say her shit was wack lol…

I know I’m jumping in kind of late, but hey I’ve been away…and also thinking about my stance on the whole Kanye West / Taylor Swift explosion.

I use the word explosion because that described exactly what happened. His intentions were legit, but his approach was just a reaction to him not dealing with his own (very personal) issues. If we take time to deconstruct this Kanye West as a man, we will see that he is as human as they come. He’s made mistakes and he will continue to make them. He was right BEY should have won that award! It sucked but it was the best out of the bunch! The song was so global. I was in the UK when I saw like 5,000 girls dancing to the song in the middle of Central London. So I’m sure we ALL FELT THE SAME WAY AT THE SAME MOMENT. But let’s stray away from what he did and and try to understand why he did what he did…and how he/we can prevent situations like this from happening…

Which takes me to my next issue. I am kind of upset that after all of this he apologized (more than once). I am sick and tired of people who do things and say sorry over and over, just to do it again. Even though his approach was wrong, I not mad at what he said. And besides it wasn’t/isn’t that serious. If I was him I would’ve said, “Look, I said what I said, she has her award, big deal…its the Mthafkin’ VMA’s!” But no…he went on to blog about it (twice), called her house, and then to cry on the Leno Show. Huh? I wanted to throw my shoe at the television when I saw that shit. He accepted this role as a foolish black man without any consideration and respect for himself and his own race, and as well as other races. And Kanye West is far from that. As for the media they are just doing what they do best (issuing psychological slavery)…but it’s much bigger than the media. It is all about people vs. themselves. It is about Black culture and why they are usually the individuals detached from their aware being…from which results to them doing something stupid…then unfortunately apologizing for it.

As an African-American working in the media, I am sick and tired of seeing images of Black people in relation to stupidity. Uhhh…it’s become apart of our rap sheet. It is reckless! Someone special, like Kanye, should understand this and know that with fame comes responsibility. KANYE, YOU HAVE TO LEARN A NEW FORM OF INSTIGATING THOUGHT. Everyone had something to say from all races…so to pull the race card…is not really targeting the issue at hand. He’s a jerk! And? Frankly, who isn’t?! He just forgot to issue diplomacy. And fucked up when he brought his personal issues to the VMA’s mixed it with that ‘mean juice’ and exploded.

…West never answered Jay Leno’s question, when asked, what would his mother say if she was here (which I found very unnecessary to ask btw, but that’s another article) But I’m sure this is what was going through his head… ” I LOVE YOU, BUT STOP GIVING PEOPLE SHIT TO SAY ABOUT YOU!” Like literally…it is time for him to stop and re-assess.

PS. Real woman don’t promote silly behavior…especially from a man they truly care about. (get into that.)

the person’s comment is interesting…nogt to go off topic but black people are your people lmaoooo….you are half black, the same way white people are your people too…..African Americans are black people, the way most of jamaicans are black people, there are black people in every country……white people are white people no matter the country lol…i think that was avery ignorant statement to say u’re 0% african american, but u are still 50% black…it’s that seperation that’s the problem with black communities everywhere. we were seperated through slavery, and still that mental slavery perpetuates…i am half black half trini indian…

but regrding Kanye…he says what people are scared to say…lol…and taylor swift didnt die so idk what the whole heap of noise is for….

Phil (LochNess) Says: 25th September at 1:08 PM

Haha oh man, this is like freshmen year courses all over again. I’ve had this discussion so many times and I really wish we were all sitting around in a circle so I could really voice myself in the best way possible.

This isn’t the time or place for a discussion on race creation but I’ll briefly say some things to get you guys thinking.

Why would we as human beings try to classify ourselves into racial structures that are nothing more than colors? You both are saying that I am “Black.” You have to realize that when you call me “black” you are reaching back and using a word that someone only centuries ago, decided was going to define an entire population of people.

In the same way that Naviana said that white people are while people no matter this country. This is COMPLETELY wrong. Take a look back in history and you’ll see that the term “white” is a racial construction which emerged only the last century. Italians, Greeks, and especially Irish ALL used to be racial entities that were NOT considered White. This is only decades ago and yet you stand here telling me that all white people are white people as if it is the be all end all statement.

All these generalizations you are using are constructions with which you need to be very careful.

This created myth of universal “Blackness” is something that exists because people CHOSE to define a group of different nationalities as Black.

I chose to define myself as what I truly am, first and foremost American, and secondarily Haitian and a mix of a number of Europeans nations.

Naviana I say that I am 0% African American because I am in fact 0% African American. There is no ignorance in that statement because it is the truth.

On base value to most eyes on the street am I perceived as Black? Surely. But getting into that would require an entire new article of which I’m not ready to do at this point.

Take it easy folks.

man. this was an epic post. incredibly well-written. it reminds me of back in the day when the comment section on my site was active. twitter killed all that, but i can see you’ve caused commotion over here.

i think that you summed it up here:

“The media is fickle and looking only to serve it’s agenda and in realizing that Kanye is not the squeak clean, sweater clad, suburban rap icon they would like him to be are now enjoying a period of crucifying him for something that should have gotten 120 seconds of coverage and nothing more.”

crucify is the best word you could have used in this situation. ‘ye was in the wrong, but when i heard about the situation, i don’t even think i was that shocked. because you expect that from the man. you’ve followed his shit-talking, braggadocios ass since day one. the media had to fulfill their agenda and mr. west was the jigsaw puzzle that they had been looking for.

completely unrelated: this kinda stunt may make him infamous (although not for long, and his jay leno impromptu interview may or may not have won him back some fans that were on the fence, but i doubt it), but in my book, there is no such thing as bad press. ‘ye bout to holler at ol’ girl, and we’re about to have a platinum selling album on taylor’s hands, spearheaded by a country-hop ballad produced by mr. martin louie the king jr himself.

oh, and last but not least (and this is something i’m about to tweet right now), the fact that his latest got 1000 times the press than his bush / katrina interruption is RIDICULOUS. good grief.

It wasn’t that this statement was WORSE or more important than any other, it was just the straw that broke the camel’s back– like enough is enough, Kayne. I watched it and thought, “WOW, does this man know no bounds?” Yes, it is surprising actually, no matter how much of an asshole we know him to be. Like the hook in “Flashing Lights” goes, “As I recall, I know you love to show off… But I never thought that you would take it this far!” Kayne’s obnoxiousness NEVER fails to shock me because you’d think he’d GROW UP.

All the way from London England. This post makes real sence, kanye seem to work on impulse. And speaks his mind, weather it be good or bad . Liberate you mind.

I read the entire post and I couldn’t have said it better myself. I could write a paragraph but you pretty much summed up my opinion on this issue too… I tweeted something along the lines of “If Ye had done this to an up and coming rapper everyone would have laughed!”

And I was also laughing when I was watching the award show… HAHA he’s a G… and I was thinking the EXACT same thing when they announced she won.. Kanye is the only one real enough to say what’s on his mind and not give a fuck.

you’re an amazing writer by the way!
